Sports events, when strategically organized and marketed, can significantly enhance Macau's image as a desirable tourism destination while also elevating the profiles of host resorts. Jeffrey Jiang, executive vice president for entertainment services at Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, emphasized this in a discussion with GGRAsia.
Galaxy Entertainment Group played a pivotal role in bringing back the renowned Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial arts events to Macau in November 2024, marking the end of a decade-long hiatus. The company expressed its commitment to hosting three UFC Fight Night events at Galaxy Arena in its Galaxy Macau casino resort, with the first event scheduled for May 30
"The UFC partnership is Galaxy Macau’s first sporting IP event post-pandemic," noted Jiang, highlighting the move as part of a broader strategy to secure a series of long-term events. This approach offers the opportunity to engage with partners over an extended period, orchestrating events that not only promote the main attractions but also contribute to Macau's reputation as Asia's leading sports and entertainment hub.
Galaxy Entertainment has observed a strengthening in both the number and scale of resort-based sports events since 2023, coinciding with the easing of pandemic-induced travel constraints. Jiang mentioned that Macau is transitioning into an era where integrated resort operators are increasingly carving out unique sports identities supported by their venues and strategic collaborations.
For Galaxy Entertainment, aligning sports events with their broader resort offerings is crucial to enhancing Macau's global visibility. Events such as UFC, the ITTF Men’s and Women’s World Cup, and the Volleyball Nations League Women’s Finals play an essential role in this strategy. Jiang noted, "Sporting and showbiz events have a commonality in that fans closely follow their stars globally," and expressed that many fans are likely to visit Macau specifically to watch their favorite athletes in action. These fans are often "more financially comfortable," which supports their travel and accommodation needs.
Jiang highlighted that sports events drive additional demand not just in ticket sales but across hotel stays, dining, retail, and MICE spaces, creating a more substantial economic impact. Moreover, sports can effectively engage high-value customers through tailored hospitality experiences. Jiang pointed out that sports fans, such as those of UFC, may travel to a destination solely for an event or to watch a specific athlete, making sports events vital for attracting and diversifying visitor demographics.
There is potential to extend their market reach, drawing visitors from beyond mainland China, specifically targeting Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and selected international markets, depending on the sport's fan base. Jiang articulated, "The strategy is to leverage sports as a ‘reason to visit,’ enhancing Macau's entertainment and resort offerings while spotlighting sports events at Galaxy Macau."
He also stressed the importance of international promotion and strategic venue management amidst growing competition from regional contenders, asserting that Macau must continue investing in the infrastructure and international marketing needed to maintain its standing as a leading entertainment destination.
