In May, the average nightly rate for five-star hotel accommodations in Macau remained unchanged from the previous year, holding steady at MOP1,555.7 (approximately US$192.6). However, the month saw a slight decrease in hotel occupancy rates, which dropped by 2.4 percentage points compared to the previous year, settling at 92.3 percent. This information comes from a recent survey conducted by the Macau Hotel Association, which is regularly published by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
The data provided by this association draws input from 49 member hotels, with 28 categorized as five-star establishments, many of which are components of casino resort complexes. Lesser star-rated properties under the association’s umbrella include some within similar casino resorts.
The early part of May included the Chinese mainland’s Labour Day holiday period for 2026, from May 1 to May 5, during which Macau welcomed a significant influx of visitors. Data from MGTO indicates that visitor arrivals from mainland China increased by nearly 7 percent year-on-year, with a total of 725,000 entries recorded during this holiday period.
Despite this boost in foot traffic, the average nightly rate for five-star hotels remained constant, although the hotel sector faced varied trends across different star categories. Specifically, the data indicated a decline in room rates for both four-star and three-star hotels.
In May, the average nightly rate for four-star hotels saw a 2.7 percent decline year-on-year, totaling MOP1,117.4, while three-star accommodations fell by 6.7 percent to MOP891.8.
Analyzing the broader data for the initial five months of the year reveals that the average nightly rate for five-star hotel rooms stood at MOP1,534.3, showing no substantial change from the previous year. However, overall occupancy in this category averaged 94.3 percent, reflecting a subtle reduction of 0.2 percentage points from the year before. Furthermore, these rates remain prominently 5.3 percent lower than those recorded in the corresponding period of the pre-pandemic year 2019, when it was MOP1,619.4.
Across all hotel categories covered in the analysis for 2026, a slight downward trend was observed, with average room rates between January and May declining by 0.2 percent year-on-year to an average of MOP1,369.0. Notably, five-star hotels represent a significant portion of Macau’s hotel market, comprising about 58 percent of the 45,400 guest rooms available as of the latest data from April.
According to the city's Statistics and Census Service, the total five-star room inventory increased by 1.1 percent compared to April 2025, accounting for 26,300 five-star rooms in total, confirming the prominence of this segment within Macau's hospitality industry.
