Macau's Premium Mass Betting Shines During May Holidays

During the beginning of the Labour Day holiday period, Macau saw noteworthy activity in its premium-mass betting segment. This analysis stems from Citigroup’s May survey, which looked into premium mass bet volumes and minimums, highlighting the holiday’s significant position second only to Chinese New Year festivities.

However, despite "solid" performance, there was a notable 15% year-on-year drop in total premium mass wager, as indicated by Citi analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau.

Year-on-Year Comparisons and Holiday Visitor Trends

Citi’s analysts noted the higher bar set by last year's figures due to the presence of two big-time players. In May 2025, one of these was the largest whale ever recorded, placing bets amounting to HKD2.9 million. Removing these outlier bets, the premium mass wager and average player wager figures for May 2026 would have been consistent with the previous year.

This May saw 58 whales compared to the previous year's 49 during the Labour Day break, signifying solid engagement from this high-rolling demographic. Additionally, a 6% dip was noted from February’s figures, associated with Chinese New Year’s peak numbers of HKD24.4 million.

This data underscores Macau’s enduring status as a top destination for mainland Chinese Golden Week visitors. About 632,951 visitors ventured to Macau during the holiday’s first three days, representing a 5% increase from last year.

Performance and Innovations in Macau's Casino Market

Within the competitive casino industry in Macau, Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd and Sands China Ltd emerged as leaders in market share. Galaxy captured a 29% share of premium mass wagers, while Sands followed closely with 26%. These numbers are reflective of their strategic hotel offerings and entertainment events, such as concerts by Hai Lai A Mu and Kelly Chen, enhancing their appeal during peak holiday times.

Furthermore, Citi highlighted a recent strategic innovation among Macau’s casinos: the introduction of new baccarat side bets. "Monkey no Monkey" and "Pairs+" offer theoretical house advantages of 16% and 18%, respectively, a fresh aspect players are still exploring. The bettors' intrigue lies in these side bets’ high payout potential, promising up to 50-to-1 and 300-to-1 returns.

Despite these new offerings, existing favorites like "Lucky 6" and "Lucky 7" continue to thrive due to their established appeal. Ryan Ho Hong Wai, a scholar in Macau gaming, previously noted these bets offer house edges in the mid-teens, complementing the innovative environment maintained by Macau’s casinos.
