SJM Holdings Ltd, a prominent casino operator, has marked significant strides in its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals for 2025. The company's latest sustainability report details advancements in several key areas, such as decarbonisation, enhancement of the workforce, and improved compliance measures.

According to Daisy Ho Chiu Fung, the chairman of SJM Holdings, the company is at a "pivotal stage" in its sustained commitment to sustainability. She emphasized the group's focus on setting new objectives while progressing in environmental management, skill development, and community involvement. "We continued to build a resilient foundation that positions SJM as a responsible leader in Macau’s integrated tourism and leisure industry," she affirmed.

Decarbonisation and Operational Improvements

In alignment with Macau's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, SJM Holdings has been proactive in extending its carbon-reduction strategies. The company has been acting in accordance with China's "dual carbon" policy goals. As part of their initiatives, SJM conducted a comprehensive energy audit and optimized air-conditioning systems, alongside integrating cleaner energy resources across the group.

Notably, the Grand Lisboa complex in central Macau transitioned to the use of natural gas. By the conclusion of the reporting period, 87 percent of SJM's fleet consisted of electric vehicles, showcasing their dedication to reducing carbon emissions.

Additionally, the group introduced various in-house technologies such as a cooling tower wind-energy recovery system and water recycling solutions, garnering regional industry accolades. Their focus on resource management was evident through the diversion of over 1,500 tonnes of recyclables from landfills and the curtailment of diesel-powered bus services.

Focus on Workforce and Community Initiatives

The progression in workforce development remains a central theme for SJM Holdings. Over 17,000 employees participated in professional training programs throughout 2025, amassing a total of 721,000 training hours. These programs were comprehensive, covering culinary skills, tourism service advancement, and internship opportunities aligned with Macau's local talent development policies.

Daisy Ho highlighted that the development and wellbeing of local employees were among the top priorities for SJM. Simultaneously, the group expanded its non-gaming activities and community initiatives, having supported over 400 corporate social responsibility events and recording 42,344 hours of volunteer service.

Such activities included scholarship schemes, youth development programs, and collaborations with local educational bodies. Regarding procurement strategies, the group reported that 73 percent of their suppliers were local small and medium enterprises.

Moreover, they spent MOP174 million (approximately US$21.6 million) on green procurement initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.
