Macau's renowned casino operator, Sands China Ltd, has taken a significant step towards enhancing its support for employees with families by unveiling a new paid parental leave program. In a bid to nurture a workplace environment that prioritizes family well-being, the company introduced these measures on September 1. According to the announcement, Sands China's latest policies include not only paid parental leave but also flexible working arrangements designed to accommodate the needs of parents.
This initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to a family-friendly corporate culture, which aligns with broader governmental policies aimed at fostering employees' work-life balance.
As part of the newly launched parental leave program, all eligible full-time staff members of Sands China are now entitled to avail themselves of up to six days of paid leave. This allowance can be used for attending medical appointments or vaccinations concerning their children during the critical first year after childbirth. This step underscores the company's awareness of the challenges new parents face during the early stages of childcare and is aimed at relieving some of the associated pressures.
Furthermore, the casino firm has introduced the 'parenthood support shift', available to expectant staff and those who have recently become parents. This innovative approach ensures regular, non-rotating shifts and allows up to 90 consecutive daily one-hour exemptions from work, thereby enabling employees to juggle childcare duties alongside career obligations more effectively.
Paulo Cheong, the senior vice president for human resources at Sands China, emphasized, "As Macau’s largest private employer with over 27,000 employees, Sands China has long supported the Macau ... government’s family-friendly policies, cultivating a people-oriented corporate culture by providing flexible and diverse workplace measures for team members with family care needs."
The introduction of these parental leave benefits augments Sands China’s existing maternity and paternity leave provisions. Female employees at the firm who have completed one year of service are eligible for a generous 70-day paid maternity leave, while male counterparts can avail themselves of five consecutive days of paid paternity leave. These maternity and paternity leave policies have been in place since 2018, demonstrating the company's longstanding commitment to supporting its staff's familial responsibilities.
Interestingly, the provisions for maternity and paternity leaves were established ahead of Macau's updated labor laws, which took effect on May 26, 2020. Under these revised regulations, all private sector employees in Macau are entitled to 70 days of maternity leave and five days of paternity leave, aligning with Sands China’s foresight in employee benefits planning.
Overall, Sands China's latest program reflects its enduring focus on creating a supportive work environment, bolstering both loyalty and satisfaction among its workforce.
