Sustaincia and Sands Cares Partner for Sustainability

Sustaincia, a sustainability-focused organization based in Macau, has entered the Sands Cares Accelerator programme. This initiative, which is a joint effort by Las Vegas Sands Corp and Sands China Ltd, is structured across three years to provide non-profit organizations with essential resources for scaling their impactful missions. Sustaincia is now the second non-governmental organization in Macau to be included in this strategic programme, which emphasizes financial backing, mentoring, and other forms of strategic support.

Technology and Innovation in Food Waste

Through its partnership with Sands Cares, Sustaincia aims to broaden the use of technology to transform food waste such as bakery remnants, rice, and cooking oil into commercially beneficial materials. This initiative is not only focused on waste reduction but also seeks to transform Sustaincia's community lab in Macau into a central hub for research and innovation in food waste valorisation.

This involves converting discarded materials into products of higher value. The collaboration is also committed to fostering opportunities for local entrepreneurs and researchers, supporting new business endeavors linked to environmental innovation, and enhancing Macau's sustainability credentials.

Statements and Future Goals

Las Vegas Sands' Senior Vice President, Ron Reese, stated that Sustaincia's vision aligns perfectly with the company’s sustainable food initiatives, making its selection into the programme a natural fit. Reese also noted that the ability of an organization to sustain its mission beyond the three-year support is crucial, and they believe Sustaincia has a solid plan for sustaining long-term impact.

The Sands Cares Accelerator is designed to provide the participating organizations with funding, planning support, and consultancy throughout their membership. Terence Lee, president of Sustaincia, emphasized the importance of the resources provided by Sands Cares in achieving their vision for enhancing food waste processes with advanced technology while promoting business and employment opportunities.

Lee is optimistic that the advancements made during their involvement with the Sands Cares Accelerator will leave a lasting impact on Macau’s sustainability efforts.
