Brian Ho Joins SJM Resorts as VP for Sustainability

Brian Ho has embarked on a new journey with SJM Resorts Ltd, the gaming arm of SJM Holdings Ltd, as Vice President of Sustainability. Ho’s transition to this role marks his return to the Greater Bay Area after four years in Singapore, where his last position was vice president for sustainability at Singapore's renowned Resorts World Sentosa, a role he had assumed from January last year. This appointment was first mentioned in a trade publication, Eco-Business, and later confirmed by Mr. Ho himself via a LinkedIn post.

Role at SJM Resorts and Previous Experience

SJM Resorts is a well-respected name in Macau’s casino industry, with its Cotai flagship, Grand Lisboa Palace, standing as a prominent landmark. Brian Ho expressed his sentiments in his social media announcement, stating: “After four years in Singapore – first at Deloitte, then at Resorts World Sentosa – I’m returning to the [Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau] Greater Bay Area to begin this new chapter.”

Before his tenure in Singapore, Ho worked as a partner at Ernst & Young in Hong Kong, where he specialized in climate change and sustainability services. His move to SJM comes at a critical time as Macau's gaming industry is actively incorporating sustainability and non-gaming development into its future strategies, guided by a 10-year gaming concession system that started in January 2023.

Sustainability Initiatives and Vision

Mr. Ho described his new role as Vice President of Sustainability at SJM Resorts as a newly created position, highlighting the company’s dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its operations. He emphasized: “This is a newly created role: a sign that SJM is serious about embedding sustainability into its operations.”

SJM has already embarked on this path, earning accolades for ESG-related projects such as energy recovery in cooling towers and implementing water recycling systems. Ho's experience in Singapore has equipped him with valuable insights into how large corporations can bolster sustainability ecosystems and support SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).

He intends to apply this knowledge in Macau, adapting strategies to the local environment while remaining open-minded about the unique aspects of Macau's distinct sustainability landscape. Concluding his thoughts, Ho stated: “My time in Singapore taught me a lot: about how sustainability ecosystems work, how large companies can support SMEs, and how culture matters more than certification.”

He aims to integrate these experiences and expand on existing initiatives at SJM Resorts, driving greater sustainability efforts both within the gaming front and beyond.
