Sharp Decline in Cotai Performance Bookings for Q2 2026

In a comprehensive review by GGRAsia, Sands China Ltd and Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd have experienced a notable decline in their aggregate concert and show bookings for the second quarter of 2026 in Macau's Cotai region. The data reflects a year-on-year decrease of 42.5 percent compared to the previous year.

The fall in bookings is significant, especially for Sands China, which contributed more significantly to the reduction. Large performance arenas operated by these companies, such as Galaxy Entertainment's approximately 16,000-capacity Galaxy Arena and Sands China's approximately 14,000-capacity Venetian Arena, have seen reduced show attendance in this period.

Due to the time required to organize and promote large-scale shows, the numbers are unlikely to change further by the end of June.

Analyzing the Decline in Show Sessions

According to GGRAsia's checks, there were 50 show sessions scheduled between April and June 2026, a significant drop from the 87 sessions held in the same period in 2025. The change in strategy appears to be a shift from artists hosting several 'mini-residencies' across multiple weekends in prior years to now limiting shows to a maximum of two concerts in a single weekend.

During the current year, Galaxy Arena hosted 16 show sessions, while the Venetian Arena hosted 7 sessions. This is in contrast to the previous year when Galaxy Arena held 18 sessions, and Venetian Arena held 12 during the same timeframe. GGRAsia's review excluded private or invitation-only gatherings and sports events from this analysis.

Impact on Future Outlook and Industry Reactions

In the first half of 2026, Galaxy Entertainment and Sands China's venues have collectively hosted 116 events, indicating a 14.7 percent reduction from the 136 events recorded in the same period in 2025. Specifically, Galaxy Entertainment is projected to have 77 events by mid-2026, slightly down by 3.8 percent from the previous year's count of 80.

Meanwhile, Sands China shows a more significant decrease, dropping from 56 events last year to 39 in the same timeframe, denoting a 30.4 percent decline. Industry experts offer varied interpretations of these statistics. Lawrence Che Fok Sang, CEO of Chessman Entertainment & Production Co Ltd in Macau, highlighted that this year's artist lineup remains attractive to both gaming patrons and non-gaming visitors despite fewer shows.

He pointed out that the recent performance of 'Wu Bai & China Blue' at the Galaxy Arena is a testament to ongoing interest in Macau's entertainment scene.

Sands China’s CEO, Grant Chum Kwan Lock, during the first-quarter earnings call of Las Vegas Sands Corp, acknowledged a deceleration in the bookings for major tours in 2026. He admitted that sustaining visitor numbers to casino resorts relies heavily on vibrant entertainment content, which they can customize due to their substantial facility offerings, such as the Venetian Arena and the mid-size Londoner Arena with a 6,000 capacity.

Additionally, financial analysts suggest events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026 might temporarily redirect the attention of Macau's casino-goers, impacting gaming budgets. However, Citigroup forecasts a recovery in Macau’s casino revenue driven by a packed schedule of shows and events in mid-July.
