During the initial phase of the October Golden Week, Macau has experienced a remarkable surge in tourism, as official figures reveal. The daily visitor average reached just above 184,100 over the first five days, highlighting an unprecedented influx.
According to Macau’s Public Security Police, tasked with overseeing the immigration check-ins, a total of 920,659 people visited the city between October 1 and October 5, amidst the festive Chinese mainland holiday known as the October Golden Week.
The visitor tally for October 4 topped at 210,325, setting a new record for the highest single-day entries since the inception of tracking such statistics during the Golden Week. This period holds immense economic significance as it coincides with a major festive break for Chinese mainlanders and serves as a peak business interval for Macau’s buzzing casino industry.
Mainland China acts as the primary source of tourists for Macau, especially during this celebratory season. In a strategic maneuver, China's State Council outlined the holiday from October 1 to October 7, integrating China’s National Day festivities. Notably, this year's holiday schedule is one day shorter compared to previous years when Macau welcomed over 1.14 million visitors.
While the security authorities did not provide a detailed breakdown of the tourists' origins during the holiday stint, insights into the entry figures are informative. Most travelers arrived via prominent checkpoints including the Border Gate with 436,072 entries, the Hengqin checkpoint registering 200,740, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge accounting for 125,210 arrivals.
Supplementary data from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) illuminated that a significant portion, specifically 650,313 out of 750,825 arrivals logged during the initial four days, originated from mainland China. Additionally, Hong Kong proved to be another substantial contributor, with 70,184 travelers entering from October 1 to 4, further solidifying Macau’s role as a popular destination during this festive period.
