The renowned banking group Citi has shared optimistic updates concerning the Macau casino market. According to a recent report, the group is notably “encouraged” to observe a "sequential recovery" in the gross gaming revenue (GGR) daily run-rate across the first nine days of August. This development marks a positive change from the daily rates recorded in July.
In a swift communication on the matter, Citi highlighted: “Based on industry sources, Macau GGR for the first nine days of August is likely to have reached circa MOP6.6 billion [US$816.8-million].” This translates to a daily rate of approximately MOP733 million, reflecting a remarkable 12 percent enhancement compared to the July daily run-rate, which was around MOP654 million.
Citi expressed its confidence, saying, “We keep our August 2026 GGR forecast of MOP23.5 billion (+6 percent year-on-year) unchanged for now.” The daily estimate provided for early August was reported to be around 3 percent higher compared to the same timeframe last year, at MOP715 million per day.
The bank identified several key factors contributing to this positive trend, noting the "sequential GGR run-rate recovery" was likely fueled by built-up demand and important concerts featured this month. These cultural and entertainment events appear to have played a substantial role in boosting attendance and gaming activity in Macau. Additionally, insights from industry sources suggested a rise in VIP volumes, recording a month-on-month surge of approximately 12 to 15 percent.
Concurrently, the mass gaming revenue also experienced growth, with increases documented between 10 and 12 percent. Citi pointed out, “VIP hold rate appears to be slightly above normal,” acknowledging certain challenges faced by some operators based on the recently published results for the second quarter.
Looking ahead, Citi maintains an optimistic outlook. The bank anticipates further recovery in GGR, driven by a "star-studded concert and event calendar" set to energize the region. Among the noteworthy events listed are performances by the popular South Korean girl group ITZY at The Venetian Arena under Sands China Ltd on August 15, and the Tencent Music Entertainment Awards scheduled for August 16 at the Galaxy Arena, part of Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd’s expansive Galaxy Macau Cotai complex.
Further adding to the excitement, Chinese-mainland pop sensation Lay Zhang is set for a performance at The Venetian Arena on August 22, while another high-profile K-pop group, (G)I-DLE, is lined up to deliver back-to-back shows on August 29 and 30 at Galaxy Arena. Citi's insights and analysis provide valuable perspectives on the evolving casino market in Macau, underscoring the significant role of entertainment events in revitalizing gaming revenues.
