Macau Reaches 30 Million Visitor Mark Ahead of Schedule

Macau has achieved a significant milestone in its tourism sector, marking 30 million visitor arrivals by 11am on September 11. This accomplishment occurred 22 days earlier compared to the schedule anticipated for 2025, as disclosed in a recent update by the city’s Public Security Police.

The authorities highlighted that this impressive visitor influx signifies "stable growth," largely attributed to favorable Chinese central government visa policies and the typical surge during the summer travel season.

Yearly Visitors and Mainland China's Role

In 2025, the total number of visitor arrivals in Macau reached nearly 40.07 million, demonstrating a 14.7% increase year-on-year. A significant contributor to this growth was the implementation of eased exit-visa measures at the beginning of the year for residents of Zhuhai, a city neighboring Macau in Guangdong province.

From January to August of the current year, Macau welcomed approximately 28.95 million visitors, averaging just over 119,000 arrivals per day. This represents an approximate 8% rise in comparison to last year's figures.

Mainland China remained the predominant market, contributing 21.54 million visits during the same period, marking a 10% year-on-year increase. This consistent growth underscores Macau’s reliance on its largest market, mainland China, which continues to be the driving force behind the expansion of its tourism sector.

Contribution from Other Regions and Global Markets

While mainland China accounted for the majority of visitors, other regions similarly added to Macau's visitor numbers. Hong Kong was the second-largest source, supplying 4.87 million visitors in the first eight months, though this was a slight dip of 1.8% from the previous year. Additionally, Macau's allure extended to international markets beyond the Greater China region, contributing 1.76 million visitors, a 3.4% increase from a year earlier.

South Korea topped the international visitor market with 340,000 individuals, followed by the Philippines with 330,000, and Thailand completing the top three with 140,000 visitors. August alone saw 4.46 million visitors arriving in Macau, a 5.7% increase compared to the same month the previous year.

Official statistics for August are expected to be released later this month, providing further insights into monthly trends, underlining the ongoing strength of Macau's tourism in various markets.
