In February, the average cost per night for a room in a Macau five-star hotel decreased to MOP1,560.0 (US$193.5), reflecting a 2.4 percent year-on-year reduction. Interestingly, this drop in price coincided with an increase in occupancy rates at these establishments.
According to a survey conducted by the Macau Hotel Association and published by the Macao Government Tourism Office, five-star hotel occupancy reached a remarkable 96.6 percent, which is an increment of 1.2 percentage points compared to February of the previous year.
The Chinese New Year holiday, integral to the lunar calendar, fell between February 15 to 23 and is noted as a peak period for visitor inflow from mainland China, Macau's predominant tourism source. This contrasts with the 2025 schedule when the festivities occurred from January 28 to February 4.
Examining the first two months of 2026, the average nightly rate for five-star accommodations was MOP1,541.3. This shows a decrease of 2.7 percent from the same timeframe in the prior year, despite continued strong occupancy at an average of 96.2 percent, representing an increase of 1.0 percentage points.
When assessing the broader hotel categories, the average room rate for January and February combined indicated a 2.2 percent drop year-on-year, falling to MOP1,388.0. This downturn in luxury hotel pricing reverses the positive growth observed in the years 2023 and 2024.
Reports show that in 2025, the overall cost for a five-star hotel room fell 5.0 percent year-on-year, settling at MOP1,513.5. These statistics highlight the contrasting dynamics of falling prices amidst increasing guest numbers.
Macau's hospitality landscape is predominantly marked by five-star accommodations. As of January, the city was home to around 26,000 five-star hotel rooms, accounting for nearly 58 percent of the total 45,000 guest rooms across all hotel categories. This represents a 6.8 percent rise in the number of luxury rooms compared to the previous January. Such hotels, primarily positioned within larger casino resort complexes, form the backbone of Macau's accommodation offerings.
The integration of luxury lodging with casino resorts continues to define Macau's tourism infrastructure and appeal. Despite a decrease in rates, the expansion in five-star accommodations suggests a sustained confidence in the luxury tourism segment of Macau’s vibrant market.
