Understanding Macau's Gaming Sector Amid China's Policy Changes

CreditSights Inc, a noted provider of credit and market research, has expressed concerns regarding the ongoing regulatory scrutiny that could affect the Macau gaming sector. Specifically, they highlight potential negative impacts on the sentiment within the VIP segment of the market.

As highlighted in a recent memo, analysts Nicholas Chen and David Bussey emphasized that while this scrutiny is unlikely to have an immediate effect on gross gaming revenue (GGR) due to existing stringent control measures, it might nonetheless contribute to decreased enthusiasm among high rollers.

Current Market Performance and Predictions

The latest data reflects a slight dip in Macau's GGR by 1.2% year-over-year in August, amounting to over MOP21.89 billion (approximately US$2.71 billion). The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau's report of this decline came after predictions of a 1% gain, marking a minor miss against market expectations.

Despite this, CreditSights analysts remain optimistic, noting that a series of highly anticipated concerts at Macau's gaming resorts throughout the latter half of the year might boost demand. These performances include popular acts such as the South Korean girl group ITZY, Donghae from Super Junior, artist Henry Lau, and the K-pop group (G)I-DLE.

Visitor Trends and Economic Implications

While overall visitor numbers in August have grown by about 6% from the previous year, reaching an all-time high and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 123.6%, there is still some complexity underlying these figures. The numbers of visitors coming from overseas, Hong Kong, and Taiwan actually declined during the same period.

Such nuances suggest that overall visitor data may not directly correlate with casino revenue, since not all visitors engage in gambling. According to CreditSights, the gross gaming revenue per visitor dropped by 7% year-over-year to MOP4,888. This implies a shift in visitor mix, potentially featuring fewer gamblers or a decrease in spending by high-stakes players.

Furthermore, when comparing month-on-month statistics, August saw a decline of 14.5% compared to July’s average GGR per visitor. These trends contribute to a growing uncertainty regarding the recovery of gaming spending on a per capita basis, a figure that Macau does not separately disclose.
