Sands China Ltd, a prominent casino operator in Macau, is poised to potentially increase its gaming volumes and hold rates with the introduction of an innovative progressive jackpot system as part of its baccarat table games. According to investment banking group Citigroup, this strategic move could significantly impact Sands China's market position, especially following the recent launch of a two-tier jackpot for side bets on '6s' and '7s' at its Cotai venues.
Analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau have highlighted that the new progressive jackpot system, designed to encourage players to place additional wagers on side bets like the Lucky 6 and Lucky 7, offers a substantial house advantage. This strategy is anticipated to elevate Sands China's overall market share within Macau's dynamic gaming industry. However, the impact of this advantage is contingent on rivals not adopting similar strategies. The capability of "smart tables," which allow for quick winnings and precise player scoring, could simplify the broader implementation of such side bets across the Macau casino landscape. Apart from Sands China, other establishments like SJM Holdings Ltd's Grand Lisboa Palace have fully utilized smart gaming tables in mass baccarat operations, marking a technological shift in how side bets can be managed and efficiently processed.
Despite challenging weather conditions brought about by Typhoon Wipha, which severely affected Macau over the weekend, player turnout and gaming enthusiasm remained largely unaffected. The typhoon, which prompted the suspension of public transport and significant disruptions, did not deter the resilience of gaming activities. Citi’s checks confirmed sustained momentum in premium mass markets. A significant observation was the presence of high-betting players, often referred to as "whales," despite the adverse weather. At Galaxy Macau's Pavilion North gaming area, high-stakes players were actively engaged, with 35 "whales" noted, compared to 23 from a previous survey. Galaxy Entertainment Group maintained a significant footprint in attracting these high-rollers, largely attributed to the appeal of the newly launched Capella hotel at Galaxy Macau. Within this context, Sands China trailed in premium mass market shares but registered notable activity correlating with entertainment events, such as a concert by Hong Kong singer Sandy Lam at The Venetian Macau. Overall, market data showed a 32% year-on-year increase in premium mass wagers, with per player wagers also rising significantly, affirming a robust gaming climate.
