On November 29, 2024, Sands China held its prestigious 'Because We Care' Team Member Annual Awards Ceremony at The Londoner Macao. This event is designed to honor those individuals and teams who exemplify the company’s core cultural values encapsulated in its 'Because We Care' philosophy. These values include friendliness, professionalism, active listening, and teamwork, driving Sands China's mission to consistently provide outstanding service to its clients, guests, and community.
Since 2013, Sands China has orchestrated this annual event to celebrate the dedication and achievements of its team members who have embraced and integrated the company's cultural values into their everyday work. The company's CEO and executive director, Grant Chum, emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating, "Since 2013, Sands China has hosted this awards ceremony to honour the dedication and excellence of our team members who have resolutely incorporated our four 'Because We Care' cultural values — We Are Friendly, We Are Professional, We Are Active Listeners and We Are One Team — into their day-to-day work."
Fostering a Culture of Recognition and Belonging
This year, the awards saw enthusiastic participation from across Sands China’s workforce, with roughly 1,800 team members from 30 different departments submitting nominations. This robust process encouraged employees to share stories and celebrate each other's successes, thereby fostering a culture of mutual recognition. The recognition platform, open to all team members, facilitated this process by allowing everyone to read, vote, and comment on the submissions.
"By sharing stories, both big and small, the company aims to increase a sense of belonging among team members and strengthen team cohesion as we share our experiences in providing unmatched service to hundreds of millions of guests," explained Chum.
A significant 50,000 votes were cast this year, and through rigorous evaluation, a committee shortlisted the top 100 nominees. To further the sense of appreciation, Wilfred Wong, Sands China's President, along with Grant Chum, took to the stage to personally present certificates to the top nominees. Winners were rewarded with trophies, cash prizes, and other prizes worth nearly MOP 750,000, acknowledging their unparalleled commitment to the company's ethos.
Honoring Excellence: The Award Categories and Winners
The ceremony recognized individuals and teams across nine distinct categories, reflecting different aspects of the 'Because We Care' values. Categories included the prestigious 'Because We Care' Premium Award, the People's Choice Award, Active Listener Award, Best Team Player Award, Professional Award, New Team Member Award, Manager of the Year, Outstanding Team Award, and Fellowship Award.
These awards sought to capture the comprehensive spirit of service and dedication among the team members. In total, 19 individuals and 7 teams received top honors this year. Notable winners included Amy Ouyang and Ivy Lam for the 'Because We Care' Premium Award. Rebecca Chen was recognized with the People's Choice Award, whereas the Active Listener Award went to Alan Liu. In a testament to team cohesion and spirit, the Venetian PAD Team secured the Outstanding Team Award. These accolades symbolize Sands China's ongoing investment in its workforce, underscoring the practical steps taken to nurture a supportive, community-focused environment.
