Macau Visitors Reach 20 Million, 57% of 2024 Total by July

As of 11am on July 8, 2025, Macau's bustling tourism sector achieved a significant milestone, welcoming a staggering 20 million visitors. This impressive tally, disclosed in an update by the city's Public Security Police, highlights an average daily influx of approximately 106,000 tourists. Comparatively, the same visitor count was only achieved by August 3 in the previous year. This shift indicates a notable acceleration in tourism activity in Macau, setting a contributory precedent for the remainder of the year. Undoubtedly, such figures posit the region as a vibrant hub for international and regional travel.

Tourism Growth Reflects Positive Trends

The data from the Public Security Police reveals that this year's count up to July 8 has already reached about 57.3% of the full-year visitor total from 2024, when Macau recorded 34.93 million entrants. With nearly half a year left, this early achievement underscores the city's potential to surpass previous tourism records. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, the Macao Government Tourism Office's director, noted the numbers as 'encouraging' during a talk coinciding with an event at the City of Dreams casino resort in Cotai. Such optimism reflects hopes of reaching 38 million to 39 million visitors in 2025, mirroring figures close to those seen before the pandemic-stricken year of 2019.

Visitor Origins and Future Projections

Examining the demographic makeup of Macau’s visitors, it becomes apparent that mainland China remains the predominant source, comprising 71.6% of arrivals. Hong Kong follows with a contribution of 19.1%. Meanwhile, international tourists – those hailing from outside Greater China – account for a smaller but notable segment, forming 6.9% of the total arrivals. Anticipating continued growth, particularly during the imminent summer holiday peak, the Public Security Police are coordinating with immigration authorities from mainland China and Hong Kong to ensure seamless customs clearance. Previously, as of July 31, 2024, visitor numbers were slightly lower at 19.74 million, with a daily average of 92,681, marking the current year's performance as notably robust. The trajectory suggests a promising upswing in tourism for Macau, as efforts intensify to maintain this momentum and hopefully achieve a record-breaking year.
