Macau's High Rollers Boost GGR Amid Player Decline

In August, Macau's premium-mass segment demonstrated notable resilience, evidenced by Citigroup's monthly table survey which revealed a 27 percent increase in the average wager per player year-on-year. Despite observing a drop of 16 percent in the total number of players, to 525, the total premium-mass wager recorded reached a significant HKD14.3 million (USD1.8 million), marking a 7 percent increase from the previous year.

The higher average wager per player, HKD27,284 compared to HKD21,543 in August 2025, underscores the ability of premier participants to contribute substantially even amidst a lower headcount.

Wynn Palace Tops in Premium-Mass Contributions

The Citi report highlighted Wynn Macau Ltd, the operator of Wynn Palace and Wynn Macau properties, leading in premium-mass segment activity. It accounted for a commanding 29 percent of the total wagers observed, a notable rise from 18 percent in August 2025. The Chairman’s Club at Wynn Palace became a focal point, registering seven whales with wagers ranging from HKD100,000 to as high as HKD820,000.

This venue exhibited the highest average wager of HKD117,300 among the 19 premium-mass rooms scrutinized by analysts during their survey.

Infrastructural Changes and Market Adjustments

Amidst these positive indicators for Macau's premium mass-market, analysts also noted infrastructural changes at several properties. Renovations were underway at MGM Cotai's Supreme room - encompassing the premium slot area - and in the Grand Lisboa Palace operated by SJM Holdings Ltd. Newly opened sections included a premium slots area at MGM Cotai and an extension at City of Dreams by Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd, characterized by 18 new gaming tables.

Interestingly, some tables at City of Dreams offered minimum bets as low as HKD300, marking a first in its pricing strategy. Despite these changes, Citi maintained its optimistic forecast for a 6 percent growth in Macau’s GGR for the full year of 2026.
