Macau Ferry Fares Rise on TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet from April 25

TurboJET and Cotai Water Jet, two prominent ferry operators servicing the Macau region, have announced fare increases to take effect from April 25. TurboJET’s fare adjustments will be approximately 10 percent higher for its various routes, including the popular Hong Kong-Macau corridor, the Macau-Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal route, and its local leisure service known as the 'Macau Cruise'.

According to Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management Ltd, the operator of TurboJET, these hikes are necessary to mitigate the impact of a recent increase in fuel prices as well as rising operational costs. This move has received the necessary approvals from the Macau government to proceed as planned. The operator stated, "The fare adjustment, averaging around 10 percent, aims to slightly alleviate the pressure from rising costs."

Cotai Water Jet Fares Adjusted for Specific Services

Similarly, Cotai Water Jet has announced a fare hike, but it is specifically targeting its economy-class 'Cotai Class' seats on the Macau-Hong Kong route. The fare during daytime sailings on weekdays will rise by 9.7 percent, moving from HKD175 to HKD192. Night sailings, in addition to weekends and holiday sailings, will see a 10 percent increase, bringing costs up from the current HKD220 to HKD242.

Weekend and holiday daytime sailings will also increase by 10 percent, from HKD190 to HKD209. Cotai Water Jet, operated by Cotai Ferry Co Ltd in collaboration with Macau casino operator Sands China Ltd, did not specify reasons for these adjustments, although it is likely in response to similar economic pressures faced by TurboJET. This service connects Hong Kong with the Taipa Ferry Terminal in Macau.

In Macau, tourists often rely on ferries or take road shuttles via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to enter the city.

Visitor Trends and Transportation Preferences

In the initial two months of the year, Macau experienced a decline in sea arrivals, registering 696,211 visitor entries—a 3.2% decrease compared to the prior year. Mainland China accounted for a large portion of these travelers, with 308,472 arrivals by sea, representing 44.3% of the total sea passenger volume.

Visitors originating from Hong Kong made up 231,153 sea arrivals, or 33.2% of the visitors who used ferry services. Interestingly, while the number of mainland visitors going through maritime routes increased by 4.7% year-on-year, those from Hong Kong saw a decrease of 10.6%.

Overall, Macau saw an increase in land arrivals, further illustrating changing travel patterns, possibly influenced by ferry fare increases or other external factors. With an aggregate visitor volume exceeding 7.82 million in January and February, about 83.7%, or 6.55 million, entered through inland checkpoints, marking a significant 17.6% year-on-year increase in land entries.
