Macau Experiences Visitor Surge in April 2025

In April 2025, Macau welcomed an impressive number of visitors, totaling over 3.09 million arrivals. This figure represents an 18.9 percent increase from the same month in the previous year, showcasing a significant recovery and growth in visitor numbers to the region. As detailed by the Statistics and Census Service, a notable driving force behind this uptick was the surge in same-day visitors, who accounted for a substantial portion of the arrivals during this period.

Increased Interest from Mainland China and Beyond

A closer examination of the data reveals that the rise in Macau’s April visitor numbers can predominantly be attributed to travelers from mainland China. In fact, approximately 68.7 percent of Macau’s visitors in this month, which equals about 2.13 million individuals, came from mainland China. This marks a notable increase of 22.4 percent compared to the previous year. Among these visitors, those traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) visas stood at roughly 1.06 million, which is a remarkable 34.1 percent increase year-on-year. Additionally, international visitor numbers also demonstrated positive growth. Macau recorded 230,014 international visitors in April, an increase of 10.4 percent compared to the previous year. The Philippines topped the list with 43,097 visitors, followed by South Korea and Thailand, reporting 37,215 and 20,463 visitors, respectively.

Cumulative Visitor Statistics for Early 2025

Between January and April 2025, Macau’s tourism sector showed an overall positive trend, welcoming nearly 12.96 million visitors over this period. This represents a 12.9 percent increase compared to the first four months of the previous year. The breakdown of these figures indicates a strong performance by same-day visitors, whose numbers soared by 23.4 percent, reaching 7.58 million. In contrast, while there was an increase in overnight visitors, it was more modest, with their numbers rising slightly by 0.8 percent to total 5.38 million. Despite these variations, the overall positive trajectory indicates Macau’s robust recovery and attractiveness as a tourist destination in 2025.
