Macau Casino Revenue Shifts in Q2: VIP Baccarat Declines

In the bustling city of Macau, known as the gambling hub of Asia, a recent analysis of the casino revenue landscape has revealed some noteworthy shifts. The latest data, released by Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Thursday, provides a comprehensive insight into the second quarter financial performance of the city’s renowned gaming industry. This report showcases significant trends that are influencing the industry and sheds light on both downturns and growth areas.

During the second quarter of 2026, the VIP table baccarat segment, which is typically a dominant player in the industry, experienced a noticeable decline in gross gaming revenue (GGR). Specifically, this segment generated MOP15.90 billion (approximately US$1.97 billion), marking a 2.6 percent drop when compared to the corresponding period in 2025. This decrease signifies a shift in the appetite and behavior of high-stakes gamblers who frequent these elite tables.

Shifts in Revenue Streams: Mass Market Strengthens

Despite the decline in VIP baccarat revenue, Macau's overall casino performance for the second quarter remained relatively stable. The aggregate GGR, which encapsulates the total gaming revenue across all casino games, registered just under MOP61.03 billion, reflecting a marginal decrease of 0.1 percent year-on-year.

Although the VIP sector typically commands a significant portion of revenue, its share decreased slightly, accounting for 26.1 percent of the second-quarter GGR from games of fortune, compared to 26.7 percent in the second quarter of 2025. On a positive note, the mass-market casino gambling segment, which includes popular options like slot machine play, exhibited growth.

The mass-market GGR stood at nearly MOP45.13 billion for the three months ending June 30, reflecting a subtle increase of 0.8 percent from the previous year. This segment accounted for a substantial portion of the total GGR, with mass-market baccarat alone responsible for 57.6 percent. This indicates a robust interest in less high-risk play, attracting a broader audience looking for entertainment.

Slot Machines and Other Gaming Segments: A Boost in Performance

One of the standout performances in the second quarter came from slot machines. Slot machine GGR saw a significant uptick, surging by 17.0 percent year-on-year, to MOP4.11 billion. This marked an increase in market share as well, as slot GGR constituted 6.7 percent of all revenue from games of fortune during this period, up from 5.6 percent a year earlier. This growth may suggest a rising preference for electronic gaming options among patrons.

Furthermore, the live multi-game electronic product category, which combines elements of traditional table games with electronic video elements, recorded a modest increase. The GGR in this category rose 3.1 percent year-on-year, reaching just over MOP1.30 billion. This growth highlights an evolving trend where players are gravitating toward diverse gaming experiences that offer both the thrill of traditional gambling with the convenience and enhanced interactivity of digital platforms.

Macau’s casino industry is evidently undergoing a transformation, with shifts in player preferences that are reshaping the revenue distribution. While the VIP baccarat sector has seen a downturn, the strength in mass-market participation and the appeal of electronic gaming show potential for sustaining the city’s renowned position in the global gaming arena.
