In June, Macau witnessed a significant upturn in its casino sector, with the gross gaming revenue (GGR) reflecting a notable increase. According to data issued by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, the revenue saw a 19 percent rise year-on-year, equating to MOP21.06 billion (approximately US$2.61 billion). Despite this success, the numbers slightly decreased by 0.6 percent when compared to May's revenue of MOP21.19 billion. Nevertheless, the June figures remain the second highest recorded since the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, underscoring a resilient recovery trajectory for Macau's gambling industry.
As the year progresses, Macau's casino sector continues to demonstrate positive growth patterns. The year-to-date total GGR has reached MOP118.77 billion, which marks a 4.4 percent improvement from the same period last year. Specifically, the performance in the second quarter of the year showcased an 8.3 percent upturn from the previous year's second quarter results, with GGR reaching nearly MOP61.12 billion, up from around MOP56.43 billion in the second quarter of 2024. These statistics highlight a robust comeback for Macau's gaming industry in the face of previous economic challenges.
Several factors contributed to the June growth in GGR. A Citigroup note pointed out that data collected from a survey conducted on June 20 showed a significant rise in premium mass wager, which was 58 percent higher than numbers from the same survey conducted in the previous year. Additionally, entertainment events further bolstered the casino industry's success. Renowned Hong Kong pop singer Jacky Cheung held a series of concerts at the Galaxy Arena in Galaxy Macau, drawing considerable visitor attention. These events likely played a role in boosting Macau's overall gaming revenue, reflecting how non-gambling activities can complement and enhance casino earnings.
