Hong Kong's medical diagnostic heavyweight, iRad, is gearing up for the launch of its eagerly anticipated medical centre, soon to open at the Cotai casino resort, Studio City. This information comes from recent job advertisements found in Macao Daily News and through local online job platforms seeking proficient medical personnel for the facility. To gather more insight, we reached out to Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd, the entity behind the Studio City resort, and iRad, to comment on the timing and scope of this new endeavor.
The iRad group is actively searching for expertise in several sectors, including aesthetic medicine, general medicine, and radiography. Additionally, they are recruiting for various operations-related roles to support their new medical establishment at Studio City. As highlighted in the employment listings, the centre plans to offer comprehensive medical diagnostic services, ranging from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography scans (CT scans), to 2D and 3D mammography, including ultrasound and X-ray capabilities. The ambition for an 'iRad Polyclinic' at Studio City was a component of a presentation given by Melco Resorts during a Macau government-led briefing in December 2022. This event provided the six gaming concessionaires a platform to detail their investment strategies that align with their new decade-long concession agreements, which began at the start of 2023.
The maneuver involving iRad ties back to March 2021, when Black Spade Capital Ltd, helmed by Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, also the chairman and chief executive of Melco Resorts, expanded its portfolio by acquiring iRad Medical Holding Ltd, a leading diagnostic imaging practice situated in Hong Kong. Consequently, Black Spade Capital emerged as the majority shareholder, retaining the original leadership team of iRad. They projected collaboration with the medical executives to devise strategies for growth and market penetration. Studio City is not an isolated case in Macau’s broader drive towards economic diversification, particularly focusing on medical tourism. This includes the inception of several other medical facilities by various casino-concession operators. For instance, Wynn Macau Ltd inaugurated a medical centre within its Cotai precinct in the previous year, delivering physical therapy and customized exercise plans. Following suit, they have launched a branch of the South Korean beauty clinic, Blanc de Vie. Similarly, MGM China Holdings Ltd has laid out plans for an 'Urban Oasis'—a groundbreaking concept intending to merge wellness and medical offerings, including hydrotherapy, dietary programs, leisure, and comprehensive health assessments.
