Eason Chan's Shows Elevate Galaxy Macau's Casino Revenue

The Macau casino sector experienced a notable uplift in August, largely credited to Eason Chan's series of concerts. According to data from Citigroup’s August betting survey, the average premium mass-market live-baccarat table bet in Macau increased by 10 percent year-on-year, reaching HKD21,543 (US$2,744). Citi analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau attributed this unexpected positive trend to the concerts by the renowned Hong Kong singer, particularly benefiting Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd.

Increased Gambling Trends in August

August is traditionally a peak season for Macau, marked by increased visitor volumes due to its status as a tourist hotspot. Despite the usual influx of casual players which often dilutes the average wagers, the month recorded a significant increase in betting activities. The average mass baccarat minimum bet rose by 6 percent compared to last year and escalated by 4 percent month-on-month, achieving a mark of HKD2,191. This development made August the third strongest month of the year, trailing only behind the festivities of Chinese New Year and the Labour Day holidays. This uptick in gambling figures suggests a recovery in consumer demand across different sectors, even amongst more modest bettors.

Strategies and Future Outlook for Casino Revenue

The series of concerts by Eason Chan—six in total at the Galaxy Arena—played a crucial role in enhancing Galaxy Entertainment's gaming business. The casino retained its leadership in the premium mass sector, with a commanding 34 percent share of the premium mass wagers observed. Across the broader market, the total wagers in this segment reached HKD13.4 million, marking a 5 percent increase from the previous year. This surge is partly attributed to Galaxy's integration of luxury offerings, such as the Capella hotel, appealing to premium clientele including high-value players or "whales".

Citi's latest survey identified 32 whales in Macau this month, compared to 25 last August. These significant players placed high stakes, with one "Player of the Month" making a HKD450,000 bet at the Horizon Room of Galaxy Macau. Additionally, several notable bets were placed at other Macau casinos, indicating a broader market response to the luxury amenities and services now available. Besides entertainment, the Macau market is exploring house-edge strategies, enhancing their casino offerings with various side bets. Wynn Macau Ltd, MGM China Holdings Ltd, and Melco Resorts are now focusing on streamlined betting options by selectively offering these side bets.

In contrast, Sands China and Galaxy have opted for an inclusive strategy, providing all side bet possibilities to their patrons. Analysts Choi and Chau expect both these strategies to yield positive outcomes similar to those witnessed in Singapore's casino markets.
